Norman (Gil) Gilman Obituary

Norman (Gil) Gilman, passed away on June 16, 2020, peacefully with family by his side after a battle with a six-month illness. Gil was born on November 17, 1947, in Middletown, CT to Mary Rose (Nanfito) Gilman and Norman Gilman Sr. He was raised and schooled in Portland before joining the U.S. Navy in 1966. After leaving the Navy in 1968 he began a career that would span more than 40 years at Pratt and Whitney as a millwright. He lived in Middletown and later Durham raising three children. Gil explored many hobbies including real estate, boating, carpentry, automobile restoration and U.S. history. He was an avid fan of genealogy, proudly tracing his ancestors back to the roots of the American Revolutionary War. He joined the Sons of the American Revolution, where he proudly served with this organization dedicated to preserving and teaching American history. Gil took his faith very seriously and had a strong belief in Jesus Christ as his personal savior. He was remarried in 1996 to Joan (Batterson) Gilman and they lived in Middletown before moving to Oxford, NC in 2008 where he enjoyed his retirement until his wife Joan passed away in 2016 from a long illness. Gil returned to Connecticut to be near family and spend time with his grandchildren. He is proudly survived by his son Christopher, daughter-in-law Beth, and their two sons, Jackson and Nicholas. His daughter Jennifer, her boyfriend, Joe and her son Anthony. His daughter Sarah, her boyfriend Adam and her two sons, Sam and Devon. His brothers, Ken and his wife Pat, Al and his wife Karen and his sister Kate. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who he thought of fondly. He was a husband, father, brother, friend and spiritual advisor but above it all, Gil was a dreamer with a big heart who was always searching for something greater than himself, he will be missed.
